Help Train the Next Generation of T1D-Savvy Healthcare Providers
In the early 1990s, Dr. David Langdon, Medical Director Emeritus, recognized a powerful opportunity: Setebaid®’s diabetes camps could do more than support children living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) — they could also shape the future of compassionate, informed medical care.
While our primary goal has always been to provide an inclusive and empowering camp experience for kids with diabetes, Setebaid® also became a one-of-a-kind training ground. By inviting medical trainees into a safe, supervised camp environment, we gave them the chance to see what living with diabetes really looks like — outside the clinic walls.
Since then, we’ve continued this legacy by offering hands-on training each summer to medical residents, nurse practitioner students, and medical students. During camp, participants gain practical experience managing insulin, handling emergencies like ketosis and hypoglycemia, and engaging in daily education sessions covering everything from diabetes pathophysiology to related conditions like celiac disease and PCOS. There are also opportunities to explore insulin pumps and glucose sensors firsthand — even wearing them to better understand what patients experience.
Our goal? To prepare more providers — especially in primary care and emergency settings — to deliver empathetic, competent care to people living with T1D.
If you’re an alum of this program, we invite you to pay it forward. Your support can help ensure the next wave of healthcare professionals continues to benefit from this rare and meaningful training — and in turn, provide better care for thousands of people with diabetes.
Please consider making a gift to support this life-changing educational program. Thank you.
